The rest of today going to tomorrow
Park Hyunsung, Yoon Sukone
2023.9.14.-10.21.
(The rest of today going to tomorrow) 》 를 개최한다.
The unprecedented festive vibe witnessed now in the art market continued from these days, yet overshadowed by this is the fact that the market is largely saturated by works of similar forms. Images of death throes that depict the era with the absence of the times, works and artists that are selected based on investment value, and curation of exhibitions focusing on social media and viewers’ leisure are breaking away from the unique artistic channel. Against such backdrop, Park Hyunsung and Yoon Sukone showcase works that challenge the classification in arts by delving into the reproduction of the mimetic experience where arts all began. Gallery Jiwooheon is pleased to announce the opening of The rest of today going to tomorrow, an exhibition of the two artists who aim to connect the ever-changing times of the contemporary society.
Having worked in Munich, Germany for nearly a decade, Park Hyunsung has showcased large-scale installation works by taking ‘relationship’ as the theme. Park mainly touches upon the moving moments of diverse emotions that take place within and around her. For her, a piece of cloth is the most flexible material. She dyes it in black, sews and knots it in an uneven form or cuts it into long lines to weave them together, and implies one’s will or that of others that take place within the tangled relationships. The way Park weaves going in and out of the frame is her representative technique. The traces of dye is a metaphor for complex emotions surrounding relationships, which leads the viewers to look into how the feelings are moved and passed on.
The exhibition sheds showcases The Last Hug, which was shown until 2022 as well as a new work made as a variation of Weight of the Coincidence. The cloth knotted like a twisted donut that hangs and fills a small space is in contrast with the straight piece of cloth that supports the lumber hanging precariously from the ceiling creates tension inside the space. Moreover, the show also includes a flat work which was made in the process of the installation.
Yoon Sukone has documents and interprets his private experiences as imageries of relationships. This was studied for long to be reproduced as paintings. Yoon’s strongpoint is a fine expression of the different lights that is reflected on a subject every moment. The expression of light that looks as if it is scattered, broken, and dispersed makes it look like faded photographs while displaying a sense of vividness. This leads the delusion of the past overlapping with the present. The historic figures, large plants, objects and landscape within daily lives as well as the snap shots of contemporary people that Yoon have dealt with look like ordinary documentation of what we would have easily encountered anywhere. Nevertheless, once the subjects are transported inside his canvas, it brings out highly intimate and private memories.
Shedding light on a range of Yoon’s works, the exhibition showcases numerous new works of his series of works titled People and Person 2, About Light and Matter, Enfolding Landscape, No man’s land. Considering the vast scope of the subjects of his works, Yoon’s past exhibitions were divided into sections based on themes. However, this exhibition makes a bold attempt to showcase all of his work trajectories at once.
The way the two artists work with ‘relationship’ as the medium is the restoration of space of mimetic experiences. ‘Mimesis’ is the practice of boldly taking the subject as it is. In the world where flamboyant agents filled with the absence of main agent, their works will restore the space to form changing relationships while bringing the audience to the exactly where the unfamiliar time of thinking all began.
