2 Moons

Kim Bokyung, Seo Minjeong: 2 Moons Aug 5 – Sept 12
Curated and written by Kim Areum, Curator, Gallery Jiwooheon
If a second, unfamiliar light hung in the night sky alongside our own, the order of reality we thought we knew might tilt ever so slightly out of place. Perhaps one moon illuminates the ground beneath our feet, while the other hangs somewhere beyond it — in the place our senses and memories keep trying to return to.
2 Moons, on view at Gallery Jiwooheon from August 5 to September 12, 2026, follows the tension and movement in the work of Kim Bokyung and Seo Minjeong as each artist moves between two moons: one reflecting the self as it exists in reality, the other reflecting a world reached only through memory or sensation.
Kim Bokyung once let an overwhelming instant slip away on a highway at dusk, lost to the flow of the everyday. She calls that lost time and place back into being through painting. Gathered, cut, and layered on canvas, her reconstructed black-and-white landscapes become a second moon raised above and beyond reality. The unbalanced rhythm of a picture plane where front and back blur together leaves behind the strange tension and lingering afterimage of two moons rising in one sky.
Her new work Afterimage of Night layers the image of streetlight glimpsed during a predawn drive with a stretch of grass sunk in darkness, tracing the form that slowly emerges as the eye adjusts to the dark. In the series White Wild Grass, wild grass swaying in the wind is placed alongside the faint tremor that never quite settles into a perfect circle. The series A Sea in Two Layers, a Flame in Two Layers and A Prayer of Fire hold together the memory of a sea where celebration and consolation overlapped, and the memory of two fires — one that saw someone off, and one that helped her endure the night alone.
At the center of Seo Minjeong's work, meanwhile, is movement — both material and immaterial. She focuses on the collision and circulation of two ambivalent, conflicting forces. The anxiety encountered in the process of breaking an object down and rebuilding it through countless brushstrokes, and the attitude of optimism she never quite lets go of, together resemble the portrait of a wanderer drifting between two moons.
Her new series Echo moves past this repeated cycle of collapse and construction, turning its gaze instead toward the simultaneity and connection between the two forces. Three iconographic points of light, never touching one another, move in the same direction across a dark, quiet dawn. Those lights might be people, or memories, or some being not yet named. Through the picture plane, the artist asks what it is that moves such different beings forward together.
Where Kim Bokyung holds the afterimage of a vanished moment in gradations of black and white, revealing a suspended moon, Seo Minjeong circulates energy through the layering of brushstrokes, revealing a moon in transit between the two. A moon held in place and a moon crossed over — different in the direction they cast their light, yet both artists trace the same passage of loss and recovery under a single night sky. Like a second moon suddenly appearing in a familiar sky, this exhibition invites viewers to look, for a moment, at the sense of reality with fresh, unfamiliar eyes.
