눈을 뜬 채로도 보지 못하는 것들이 있다. 거리의 표지판, 창가의 먼지, 선반 위 오래된 물건들. 익숙함이 낳은 투명함 속에서 대상은 그저 사물로 남아있을 뿐이다. 그러나 김중옥과 해요의 두 손을 거치면 그 평범한 일상의 파편들은 갑자기 입을 열고 이야기를 시작한다.
갤러리 지우헌은 5월 21일부터 6월 21일까지 현대미술이 가진 알레고리적 시선을 조명하는 전시로 김중옥과 해요 작가가 함께한 《현대우화(Modern Allegories)》를 개최한다. 전시장 벽면을 채운 작품들은 일종의 주문과도 같다. ‘눈을 감아라, 그리고 다시 보라.’ 이것이 두 작가가 우리에게 속삭이는 말이다.
김중옥의 작업은 인간과 자연 사이에 존재하는 신비한 교감을 상기시킨다. 마치 한국 전통 설화에서 튀어나온 듯, 현대적 감각으로 재해석된 우화를 들려준다. 양주의 한적한 시골에서 작업하는 그는 유기견의 눈빛과 산등성이의 굴곡에서 자신의 내면을 발견한다. 미술과 철학을 전공한 작가의 시선은 독일과 한국을 오가며 축적된 경험을 바탕으로 구상과 추상의 경계를 자유롭게 넘나든다. 그의 붓 끝에서 주변 인물과 동물, 자연 풍경은 단순한 피사체가 아닌 인간 내면의 거울이 된다.
반면 해요는 일상의 사물을 무대 위로 끌어올린다. 그의 화폭에서는 화집, 엽서, 물병과 같은 평범한 물건들이 연극적 장치로 변모한다. 이는 단순한 재현을 넘어선 메타적 질문을 던진다. '우리가 보는 것'과 '우리가 아는 것' 사이의 간극을 드러내며, 사물의 본질에 대한 질문을 유도한다. 리넨천의 질감을 살린 매트한 물감 사용은 마치 시간이 켜켜이 쌓인 듯한 시간의 깊이를 담아낸다. 그에게 사물은 단순한 정물이 아닌, 미시적 우주의 단편들이다.
두 작가의 작업은 겉보기에 다른 세계를 다루는 듯하지만, 그 밑바탕에는 공통된 시선이 흐른다. 일상을 낯설게 바라보는 태도, 친숙한 것에서 새로운 의미를 발굴해 내는 해석학적 감각이 그것이다. 철학자 아도르노가 말한 '별자리(Konstellaion)’ 개념처럼, 이들은 흩어진 일상의 파편들을 새롭게 연결하여 우리가 미처 보지 못했던 패턴과 이야기를 만들어낸다.
《현대우화》는 우리가 얼마나 많은 것을 보지 못한 채 지나치고 있는지, 매일 스쳐 지나는 사물과 풍경들은 어떤 이야기를 품고 있는지 묻는 동시에, 그 해석을 강요하지 않는다. 오히려 관람객 스스로 작품과 대화하며 자신만의 우화를 만들어가길 기대한다. 김중옥의 자연적 상징과 해요의 정물적 무대가 만나는 지점에서, 우리는 익숙한 세계를 새롭게 읽어내는 법을 발견하게 될 것이다.
There are things we cannot see even with our eyes open. Street signs, dust on windowsills, forgotten objects on shelves. In the transparency born of familiarity, objects remain mere things. Yet, as they pass through the hands of Kim Joongok and Heyo, these ordinary fragments of daily life suddenly open their mouths and begin to speak.
Gallery Jiwooheon presents Modern Allegories, an exhibition featuring artists Kim Joongok and Heyo, illuminating the allegorical vision inherent in contemporary art, from May 21 to June 21. The works adorning the gallery walls function as a kind of incantation: Close your eyes, and see again. This is what the two artists whisper to us.
Kim Joongok's work evokes the mysterious communion between humans and nature. As if emerging from traditional Korean folklore, she presents fables reinterpreted through a contemporary sensibility. Working in the tranquil countryside of Yangju, she discovers her inner self in the gaze of stray dogs and the contours of hillsides. With backgrounds in art and philosophy, the artist's perspective freely traverses the boundaries between figurative and abstract, drawing on experiences accumulated between Germany and Korea. Under her brush, surrounding figures, animals, and natural landscapes become not mere subjects but mirrors reflecting human interiority.
Heyo, on the other hand, elevates everyday objects to the stage. On his canvas, ordinary items like art books, postcards, and water bottles transform into theatrical devices. This goes beyond simple representation, posing meta-questions that reveal the gap between what we see and what we know, prompting questions about the essence of objects. His use of matte paint that accentuates the texture of linen creates a depth that suggests layers of accumulated time. For him, objects are not simple still lifes but fragments of a microscopic universe.
Though the two artists appear to explore different worlds, an underlying shared vision flows beneath: an attitude that views the everyday with unfamiliarity, a hermeneutic sensitivity that unearths new meanings from the familiar. Like philosopher Adorno's concept of constellation (Konstellation), they reconnect scattered fragments of daily life to create patterns and narratives we have failed to notice.
Modern Allegories asks how much we pass by without seeing, what stories are contained in the objects and landscapes we encounter daily, while simultaneously not imposing an interpretation. Rather, it invites viewers to engage in dialogue with the works and create their own allegories. At the intersection where Kim Joongok's natural symbolism meets Heyo's staged still lifes, we discover new ways of reading our familiar world.
김중옥(b.1989)은 건국대학교에서 철학을 공부하며 현대미술과를 졸업했고, 2017년부터 독일과 한국을 오가며 다양한 매체 실험을 진행하고 있다. 주요 개인전으로 《천둥벌거숭이중옥》(2024, 갤러리 래빗앤타이거, 서울), 《Talking Dog》(2022, 갤러리 Irrgan, 라이프치히, 독일), 《Waeld》(2020, 갤러리 아노브, 서울)이 있다. 주요 그룹전으로 《Fairy Foundation》(2023, Haus der Statistik, 베를린, 독일), 《Dreamy Cube Curve》(2022, Pilotenkueche, 라이프치히, 독일) 등에 참여했다. 독일 라이프치히 Pilotenkueche(2022)에서 레지던시를 거쳤으며, 현재 경기도 양주 선조들의 터전에 스튜디오를 마련하고 작업하고 있다.
Kim Joongok (b.1989) studied philosophy and graduated from the Department of Contemporary Art at Konkuk University. Since 2017, she has been conducting various media experiments while traveling between Germany and Korea. Her major solo exhibitions include Thunder Naked Joongok (2024, Gallery Rabbit & Tiger, Seoul), Talking Dog (2022, Gallery Irrgan, Leipzig, Germany), and Waeld (2020, Gallery Anobv, Seoul). She has participated in group exhibitions including Fairy Foundation (2023, Haus der Statistik, Berlin, Germany) and Dreamy Cube Curve (2022, Pilotenkueche, Leipzig, Germany). She completed a residency at Pilotenkueche in Leipzig, Germany (2022) and is currently working in her studio established on her ancestors' land in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province.
해요(b.1983)는 제주대학교 예술학부 서양화과를 졸업했고, 제주도를 거점으로 서울을 오가며 활동하고 있다. 주요 개인전으로 《Heyo: Still Life》(2024, 큐아카이브, 서울), 《Intimate Sight》(2022, 아잇 갤러리, 서울), 《Colour Flow》(2016, 제주&아트스페이스9, 제주)를 개최했다. 그룹전으로는 《옥토 OCTO》(2025, 페이지룸8×갤러리 지우헌, 서울), 《삶, 다양성》(2024, 갤러리X2, 서울), 《One, One》(2023, 미들맨 갤러리, 부산) 등에 참여했다. 2015년 제주 청년작가전에서 우수 청년작가로 선정된 바 있다.
Heyo (b.1983) graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Jeju National University's Faculty of Arts and works between Jeju Island and Seoul. His major solo exhibitions include Heyo: Still Life (2024, Q Archive, Seoul), Intimate Sight (2022, Ait Gallery, Seoul), and Colour Flow (2016, Jeju & Art Space 9, Jeju). He has participated in group exhibitions such as OCTO (2025, Pageroom8 × Gallery Jiwooheon, Seoul), Life, Diversity (2024, Gallery X2, Seoul), and One, One (2023, Middleman Gallery, Busan). In 2015, he was selected as an outstanding young artist at the Jeju Young Artists Exhibition.

갤러리 지우헌은 ㈜디자인하우스에서 운영하는 전시공간으로 북촌 한옥마을에 위치하고 있다. 한옥을 개조한 독특한 구조로 전통적인 미감과 현대적인 편의성을 두루 갖추고 있으며, 2016년 서울시 우수한옥으로 선정되었을 만큼 뛰어난 건축미를 갖고 있다. 과거의 역사를 담고 있는 공간에서 현대미술을 조명하는 시공간적 특징을 가진 갤러리로서 동시대 미술의 흐름에 동참하며 국내·외 신진작가 발굴과 후원에 힘쓰고 있다.
Gallery Jiwooheon is an exhibition venue operated by Designhouse, Inc., located in Bukchon Hanok Village. It was selected as the 2016 Seoul Excellent Hanok for its distinctive structure remodeled from a hanok, which offers both traditional aesthetics and contemporary convenience and has remarkable architectural beauty. It aspires to identify outstanding new artists at home and abroad while supporting the trend of contemporary art as a gallery with temporal and spatial qualities that shines a light on contemporary art in a space possessing the history of the past.
