일상의 온기를 담은 부엌의 서사 그리고 사물의 기억
갤러리 지우헌은 3월 12일부터 4월 5일까지 지훈 스타크의 개인전 《LUMI KUKE: 부엌에서 짓는 사한》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 유년 기억과 한국 전통 소재를 현대적 감각으로 재해석한 예술적 여정을 담고 있다.
1976년 인천 출생으로 아이오와 주립대학에서 건축을 전공한 지훈 스타크는 뉴욕, 하와이, 뮌헨 등에서 건축가와 작가 활동을 동시에 펼쳐왔으며, 2012년부터는 서울을 중심으로 활동을 하고 있다. 회화와 고재(reclaimed wood) 조각, 도예까지 다양한 장르를 넘나드는 작업 세계를 구축해왔다.
하와이어로 '부엌'을 의미하는 'LUMI KUKE'는 단순한 공간이 아닌, 존 케이지의 표현처럼 "진정한 음악이 울려 퍼지는" 살아있는 장소다. 작가는 2022년 갤러리 SP에서 'salt to taste'라는 부제로 LUMI KUKE 시리즈의 첫 전시를 선보였으며, 당시 자신이 실제 사용하는 요리 도구들로 감각적인 작품을 구현했다. 이번 전시의 부제 '부엌에서 짓는 사한'은 작가의 사적 기억과 흔적이 남은 사물들을 구체적으로 개입시켜 더욱 내밀한 이야기를 펼쳐낸다.
'사한'은 '한국, 한옥, 한식, 한글'이라는 네 가지 '한(韓)'과 '생각하다'를 뜻하는 '사(思)'의 결합으로, 한국에서 태어나 어린 시절 미국으로 이주한 작가의 문화적 정체성을 반영한다. 작가는 LUMI KUKE를 구상할 당시 시각적, 미각적, 공간적 감상을 구체적 형태로 가시화하는 과정을 거쳤다고 설명하며, 식재료를 섞는 과정을 물감을 섞는 행위에 비유했다. 이처럼 일상 속 내밀한 공간에서 출발한 작품들은 관람자에게 반복되는 생활 속에서 발견하는 흥미로운 기호와 이미지적 유희를 선사한다.
이번 전시는 총 26점의 신작으로 구성된다. 전시장에 들어서면 가장 먼저 만나게 되는 너비 2미터에 가까운 크기의 대형 캔버스 작품은 한옥 지붕, 가마솥, 장독대, 그리고 백숙이 차려진 소반을 간결하면서도 섬세한 선으로 표현한 <빨간 밥상의 추억>이다. '쌀'과 '사극 치킨'이라는 위트 있는 한글 텍스트는 작가의 이중적 문화 경험을 드러내며, 한옥 부엌 특유의 구조와 살림 도구, 시멘트 바닥 타일을 간결한 선으로 구성한 형태에서는 건축가로서의 시각적 언어가 엿보인다.
<조선시대 어머니>는 뛰어난 음식 솜씨를 지녔던 작가의 어머니에 대한 개인적 기억을 담고 있다. 어머니의 비법이 담긴 갈비찜 레시피 메모, 소반과 밥그릇, 소중히 여기던 작은 의자, '장 씨'라고 한글로 적은 어머니의 성씨까지, 개인적 기억의 조각들이 푸르고 검은 색채와 함께 하나의 화면에 응축되어 있다.
70년대 한옥에서 가져온 고재로 제작된 '한봇' 조각 시리즈는 작가의 표현에 따르면 '구조된 한옥의 고재'라는 의인화된 재료를 중심으로 만들어졌다. 부러지고 갈라진 나무의 형태, 벗겨진 칠, 튀어나온 못 등 쓰임을 다 한 세월의 흔적을 작업에 그대로 살려냈다. 마을 입구를 지키던 장승을 연상시키는 이 작품들은 역사의 흔적과 현대적 감각이 절묘하게 어우러진다.
주목할 만한 점은 작품마다 등장하는 소금통과 후추통, 한옥의 기와와 아궁이, 장독대, 그리고 산의 능선을 암시한 드로잉들이 암호와 같은 기호로 표현된 것이다. 이는 작가의 시그니처 요소로서 작품 전체를 아우르는 상징적 언어로 자리한다. 더불어 도예의 분청기법을 회화에 접목해 물감을 바르고 걷어내는 자연스러운 과정을 담아내며, 마치 꿈속 언어처럼 아스라한 기억을 표현해낸다.
생경하면서도 서정적인 작품의 제목 또한 특별하다. <산 밑에 마당땅>, <가을 부엌>, <고요한 달, 따뜻한 빵>, <할머니의 사과농장> 등의 제목은 일상의 소소한 순간들을 포착하며 작가의 기억 속에 자리한 정서적 풍경을 담아낸다. 이 제목들은 단순한 명명을 넘어 하나의 시적 언어로 기능하며, 관람자로 하여금 작품 속으로 자연스럽게 빠져들게 한다.
이밖에 전시장 한 켠에 한 평도 안 된 분리된 공간의 벽에 작업에 영감을 주었던 한글 단어나 관련된 이미지를 모은 드로잉을 가득 채워 놓아 작가의 순수한 시선을 직접적으로 볼 수 있는 공간도 마련되어 있다. 작가가 택한 구체적인 소재들은 오히려 감상의 폭을 넓혀 개인의 내밀한 기억과 연결할 수 있는 통로적 역할을 수행하며, 이를 통해 관람자 각자의 경험이 작품과 만나 새로운 의미를 생성해낸다.
지훈 스타크의 작품은 일상의 경계를 허무는 독창적인 감성으로 충만하다. 어린아이 같은 시선으로 세상을 바라보며 즉흥적인 붓질로 일상과 자연을 자유롭게 엮어 경계 없는 풍경을 창조한다. 회화와 조각뿐 아니라 찻잔, 트레이, 화병 등 다양한 생활 도자기 작품들은 예술과 일상 사이의 경계를 부드럽게 녹여낸다.
《LUMI KUKE: 부엌에서 짓는 사한》은 개인의 향수를 넘어 한국적 정서와 현대적 감각, 기억과 역사, 전통과 혁신이 교차하는 다층적 서사를 제시한다. 작가가 의도한 대로, 관람자들은 그의 작품을 음미하듯 감상하며 각자의 기억 속 부엌으로의 여행을 경험하게 될 것이다.
“The Narrative of a Kitchen Filled with Everyday Warmth and the Memories of Objects”
Gallery Jiwooheon presents Jee Hoon Stark's solo exhibition LUMI KUKE: 4Han from Kitchen from March 12th to April 5th. This exhibition embodies the artist's journey of reinterpreting childhood memories and traditional Korean materials through a contemporary sensibility.
Born in 1976 in Incheon, Jee Hoon Stark studied architecture at Iowa State University. He has pursued a dual careers as an architect and artist in New York, Hawaii and Munich. Since 2012, he is working as an artist in Seoul, Korea. His work spans various disciplines, including painting, reclaimed wood sculpture, and ceramics, establishing a diverse and interdisciplinary artistic practice.
'LUMI KUKE' which means 'kitchen' in Hawaiian, is not merely a space but, in John Cage's words, "a place where true music resonates." In 2022, the artist presented the first exhibition of the LUMI KUKE series at Gallery SP with the subtitle salt to taste, creating sensory works using his actual cooking utensils, recipes and process of cooking itself. The current exhibition's subtitle, 4Han from Kitchen, unfolds a more intimate narrative by concretely incorporating objects bearing the artist's personal memories and historical traces.
'4Han' combines the four Han (韓) elements—Hankuk (Korea), Hanok (Korean traditional house), Hansik (Korean cuisine), and Hangeul (Korean Alphabet)—with Sa (思), meaning 'to think,' reflecting the cultural identity of the artist who was born in Korea and immigrated to the United States as a child. The artist explains that when conceiving LUMI KUKE series, he underwent a process of visualizing sensory, taste, and spatial experiences into concrete forms, comparing the mixing of ingredients to the act of mixing paints. Works originating from these intimate spaces of daily life offer viewers playful semiotic and imagistic interactions discovered within repetitive daily routines.
This exhibition comprises 26 new works. Upon entering the exhibition space, visitors first encounter a large canvas nearly two meters wide titled , depicting a Hanok roof, cauldron, earthenware jar stand, and a small table set with Korean-style boiled chicken through concise yet delicate lines. The witty Hangeul texts 쌀(rice) and 사극치킨 (historical drama chicken) reveal the artist's dual cultural experience, while the architectural visual language is evident in the succinct linear composition of the Hanok kitchen's unique structure, household tools, and cement floor tiles.
contains personal memories of the artist's mother, who possessed exceptional culinary skills. Elements of personal memories—his mother's Galbi-jjim (braised short ribs) recipe notes, small dining table, rice bowl, cherished small chair, cherry tree, and her surname 장 (Jang), but also referring 장 (Jang) as traditional Korean ingredients written in Hangeul—are condensed onto a single canvas with blue and black hues.
The HAN BOT sculpture series, created from constructed wood from 1970s Hanok houses, is centered around what the artist personifies as 'salvaged Hanok materials.' The works preserve the traces of time—broken and split wood forms, peeled paint, protruding nails—in objects that have served their purpose. Reminiscent of Jangseung that once guarded village entrances, these works demonstrate an exquisite harmony between historical traces and contemporary sensibilities.
Notables are the salt and pepper shakers, Hanok roof tiles, fireplace, earthenware jar stands, and drawings suggesting mountain ridges that appear in each work as encoded symbols. These serve as the artist's signature elements, functioning as symbolic language encompassing the entire body of work. Additionally, by applying Buncheong ceramic techniques to painting—applying and removing paint in a natural process—the artist expresses hazy memories like dream language.
The unfamiliar yet lyrical titles of the works are also significant. Titles such as <'MADANG DDANG' under the Mountain>, <Autumn Kitchen>, <Silent Moon, Warm Bread>, and <Grandma's Apple Farm> capture small moments of daily life and embody the emotional landscapes residing in the artist's memory. These titles function beyond simple naming as poetic language, naturally drawing viewers into the works.
Additionally, a separate space (STARK PANTRY) less than a square meter in size has been dedicated to displaying drawings filled with Hangeul words and alphabets, related drawings, images and collages that inspired works, providing direct insight into the artist's pure perspective. The specific materials chosen by the artist broaden the scope of appreciation, serving as pathways connecting to intimate personal memories, through which each viewer's experience meets the artwork to generate new meanings.
Jee Hoon Stark's works are filled with original sensibility that dissolves the boundaries of everyday life. Viewing the world with childlike eyes, he creates boundaryless landscapes that freely weave daily life and nature through spontaneous brushstrokes. His diverse works—not only paintings and sculptures but also practical ceramic pieces such as sake/whiskey cups, platters, and vases—gently dissolve the boundary between art and daily life.
LUMI KUKE: 4Han from Kitchen presents a multi-layered narrative where Korean sentiment and contemporary sensibility, memory and history, tradition and innovation intersect beyond personal nostalgia. As the artist intended, viewers will savor his works like a delicacy, experiencing a journey to the kitchen of their own memories.

JEE HOON STARK (b.1976) studied architecture at Iowa State University and has worked as both an architect and artist in New York, Hawaii, Munich, and other cities. His major solo exhibitions include A Bite, A Sip of Roots (2024, PPURI on the Plate, Seoul), LUMI KUKE: Salt to Taste (2016/2020/2022, Gallery SP, Seoul), and Life Between Buildings: A Toy City Series Part 2 (2018, Unexpected Combination, Seoul). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in New York, Nashville, Berlin, Iowa, and beyond. His works are part of the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and the Daegu Art Museum.

갤러리 지우헌은 ㈜디자인하우스에서 운영하는 전시공간으로 북촌 한옥마을에 위치하고 있다. 한옥을 개조한 독특한 구조로 전통적인 미감과 현대적인 편의성을 두루 갖추고 있으며, 2016년 서울시 우수한옥으로 선정되었을 만큼 뛰어난 건축미를 갖고 있다. 과거의 역사를 담고 있는 공간에서 현대미술을 조명하는 시공간적 특징을 가진 갤러리로서 동시대 미술의 흐름에 동참하며 국내·외 신진작가 발굴과 후원에 힘쓰고 있다.
Gallery Jiwooheon is an exhibition venue operated by Designhouse, Inc., located in Bukchon Hanok Village. It was selected as the 2016 Seoul Excellent Hanok for its distinctive structure remodeled from a hanok, which offers both traditional aesthetics and contemporary convenience and has remarkable architectural beauty. It aspires to identify outstanding new artists at home and abroad while supporting the trend of contemporary art as a gallery with temporal and spatial qualities that shines a light on contemporary art in a space possessing the history of the past.
